Philosophical Table #22

Let’s face it: discrimination on all levels of society is a hot topic that we cannot simply look away from anymore. Although discrimination and racism have gotten a lot of attention recently especially from corporate and legislative perspectives, it has become clear that discrimination is sometimes deeply rooted in aspects of our culture and daily life. So deeply, that we sometimes apparently fail to notice it anymore…

During this Philosophical Table, you’re invited to shine your light on possible discrimination taking place within the (spatial) design practice. After all, our discipline is the ultimate example of setting our cultural patterns in stone. How to move the subject out of the realm of subjectivity? What do our designs reveal about discrimination?  Is it possible to actively engage in more inclusive and neutral design methods? And how desirable is neutrality compared to exclusivity?
